Did you know June marks the beginning of Strawberry Season? In honor of the delicious, red, juicy fruit I’m sharing one of my favorite mid-morning or late afternoon snacks, a gluten free smoothie full of superfoods and of course strawberries!
I have the greatest memories of strawberry picking with my family as a kid. Afterwards our counter, fridge and freezer would be stocked full of strawberries….so many strawberries.
Now that I am all grown up with a family of my own, I can’t wait to share that experience with my husband and son. In the meantime, I’ve already begun planning all the yummy ways to eat our strawberries.
This delicious smoothie recipe is gluten free, has no refined sugar, plenty of protein and it’s jam-packed with nutrient rich foods like spinach, maca and cacao. This is one of my go-to mid-morning or late afternoon snacks. If I need a sugar fix, the natural sweetness of the strawberries and banana always satisfies my craving. Or if its dark chocolate I’m after, the earthy and slightly bitter taste of the cacao usually does the trick. I also love that this recipe lets me sneak in an extra serving or two of greens.
Ingredients (Serves 2):
5-6 medium strawberries
2 handfuls organic baby spinach
2 tablespoons organic almond butter
2 tablespoons cacao
1 tablespoons maca
1 cup unsweetened organic vanilla almond milk
couple of ice cubes (optional)
Combine all ingredients in a blender and mix until liquified. Drink immediately or make it first thing in the morning and take it to-go.
